With the rapidly expanding universe of what is known about how emotion works in the brain and body, we are in desperate need of an organizing theory that can contain this knowledge so we can leverage its usefulness. Fifty years ago, Silvan S. Tomkins wrote the first installments of just such a theory. His insight into the operating system of the human being was deep, wide and extraordinarily brave.
