Brett E. Schur, PhD

Brett E. Schur, PhD, is Chief Psychologist of the Tomkins Institute. Best known in SSTI circles for his role as Co-Chairman of the 1999, 2000, and 2002 Colloquia, he has been an active member of the Executive Committee since 1999. Dr. Schur came to Clinical Psychology with an interest in disabilities and the psychological adaptation to loss. He wrote his Master's thesis on interpersonal relationships and disability, and his Doctoral dissertation on social support for elderly widows. He continues to have an interest in the concept of grief as applied to such personal and social losses as catastrophic injury and illness. More recently, Dr. Schur has been working with Training Director Jonathan L. Grindlinger on the "road show," a series of portable continuing education programs being developed to introduce clinicians to the basic concepts of the Philadelphia System. With Dr. Wesley G. Novak, they meet regularly in a study group format to explore and develop new applications of Tomkins's work to clinical practice. It is their hope that these programs will pique the interest of a new generation of SSTI members. Dr. Schur maintains a general psychotherapy practice in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania, working with adult clients ranging in age from 18 to 96, many of whom are learning to live with chronic pain and other disabilities. He has also been developing a growing practice with couples.
