Brief Introduction to Restorative Practices:
The exciting and ever-growing world of Restorative Practices (including Restorative Justice, Conflict Transformation, etc.) offers a rich opportunity to see ASP in vivo! Restorative Practices are being used effectively in criminal justice, schools, workplace, and many other areas where conflicts and crimes occur and need to be managed effectively and creatively. The framework of Restorative Practices places focus on repairing the harm done to relationships (healing and learning), in contrast to assigning blame and delivering punishment.
Affect Theory has played an important role in the field of Restorative Practices, expanding our understanding of why these approaches and interventions are as powerful and effective as they are. ASP provides explanations beyond a criminal justice perspective to a biological perspective of what truly motivates human beings and how can we maximize the potential for authentic transformation of individuals and groups.
Several Tomkins Institute members (David Moore, Don Nathanson, Lauren Abramson, Vick Kelly, Marg Thorsborne, Sue Deppe) and others have written extensively about how knowledge of the motivational primacy of affect can support the work of RP practitioners, researchers, policy makers, and participants alike.
